Some children receive home delivery if they can't get to school. |
We pride ourselves on finding creative responses to seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
But our staff in Gaza are down to the very last drops of fuel and we are facing grave challenges that mean we cannot make deliveries as frequently as needs require – sometimes, not at all.
Ambulances aren't running, municipalities have stopped garbage pick up, only a small percentage of children can get to school. The list goes on and on – lack of fuel has an effect on every piece of daily life and is slowly bringing daily life for families in Gaza to a complete halt.
When we can get our milk and wafers to preschools in Gaza, many of the children are not there to receive them. In some cases, when everything works out with timing and fuel, an ANERA coordinator can drop into a community and deliver milk and wafers where people live, but if the fuel stoppage continues, we fear there will be very few options left.
We do find inspiration from families who find ways to keep life somewhat care-free for their children. Some are lucky to have access to donkeys, an old-fashioned solution to this transportation crisis, and one that has ensured students get to their classes to receive fortified milk and biscuits.
But donkeys are simply not enough.
Without a doubt we are facing a severe challenge, with no end in sight.
We are committed to finding creative solutions to this dire problem. Our staff in Gaza find ways over every hurdle to make medical and milk deliveries to the people who need them most.
