Strengthening Climate-Smart Agriculture and Livelihoods in Jordan
AMMAN, Jordan (June 29, 2026) — Anera and Applied Science Private University have launched a smart greenhouse and medicinal garden initiative to strengthen climate-smart agriculture and promote sustainable livelihoods in Jordan. The project will provide students and community members with practical training in water-efficient food production and sustainable farming practices, helping address the country’s growing food and water security challenges while preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders.
“This partnership with Applied Science Private University is about reconnecting young people with agricultural knowledge that has long been part of our communities. Together, we are creating a practical learning space where innovation, traditional knowledge and community resilience can grow side by side,” said Anera Lebanon and Jordan Country Director Samar El Yassir.
Through the partnership, both organizations will create practical learning opportunities that benefit students and surrounding communities alike.
“At Applied Science Private University, we believe education should create impact beyond the classroom. Through our partnership with Anera, this greenhouse will give students valuable hands-on experience while sharing practical, sustainable agricultural knowledge with surrounding communities. We hope it becomes a model for how innovation, education, and collaboration can help address Jordan’s water and food security challenges and inspire future generations to build a more sustainable future,” said professor Feras Darwish El Hajji, vice president of Applied Science Private University.
The 10-month initiative will provide students from pharmacy, medical sciences and other disciplines at the university with experience in cultivating medicinal and food plants using modern, climate-smart agricultural technologies. The project will also offer training opportunities for community members, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to grow food and medicinal plants in small urban spaces.
The greenhouse will contain climate-friendly technologies, including hydroponic systems, wicking beds and water-efficient irrigation. It will serve as a living laboratory for students and a demonstration site for low-cost farming solutions that can be used by households.
The project follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Anera and Applied Science Private University that establishes a framework for collaboration in sustainable agriculture, education, innovation and community engagement. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to giving people practical skills, strengthening local communities and creating sustainable opportunities that benefit both academic institutions and surrounding communities.
