Where does Anera’s money come from?

Anera’s life-changing work across Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Jordan is powered by the generosity of government grants, foundations, individual donors, corporate partners and in-kind contributions. Each gift – whether financial or product-based – plays a vital role in delivering humanitarian aid, fostering sustainable development and responding to crises. How does Anera account for where its funding goes?

Anera is audited annually by independent auditors (see our most recent audit) and we follow U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (U.S. GAAP), which are standard financial guidelines for most non-governmental organizations, measuring the benefits and the success of each program. As a long-time recipient of funds from the U.S. government and the United Nations, Anera has also undergone annual UN and U.S. audits.

Anera posts the results of our annual independent financial audits on our website along with our annual IRS 990 forms.

Our annual reports are also available online. They provide a snapshot of our health, relief, education and community activities in the Middle East as well as information on funds raised and spent.

How do independent organizations rate Anera?

Leading independent charity evaluators – including Charity Navigator, Candid (formerly GuideStar) and the Better Business Bureau – routinely award Anera their highest ratings, reflecting the organization's commitment to responsible financial management and measurable humanitarian impact.

Who provides oversight of Anera’s work and finances?

Anera is governed by a board of directors made up of accomplished leaders who bring diverse expertise and a shared commitment to the organization's mission. How does Anera ensure that its work does no harm?

Anera works with populations of all ages living in vulnerable situations, often without recourse to legal protections and safety nets available in other countries. We have an obligation to do no harm and to honorably serve the communities where we are delivering aid and development programs. We serve all populations, without ID check, so as not to foster competition among refugees and vulnerable host communities.

How does Anera prevent fraud, corruption and misuse of aid?

Anera’s mission is strictly humanitarian, with no intent to advance political parties, military actions, ideologies, or religious agendas. Rigorous compliance and due diligence systems ensure donor funds are managed responsibly and all operations meet the highest legal and ethical standards.

Operational vetting relies heavily on U.S. government databases and automated compliance systems. Anera screens against more than 200 international sanctions and watchlists, including the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, the U.S. government's System for Award Management and the Descartes denied party screening platform, which provides automated daily screening of staff, consultants, vendors and partners against sanctions databases, politically exposed persons lists and adverse media sources.

If any person or entity associated with Anera’s work is identified as being involved in fraud, corruption, misuse of funds or aid, waste, abuse, or terrorism – or if credible information comes to Anera’s attention suggesting such involvement – Anera immediately ceases all business with them.

How does Anera ensure its partners are trustworthy?

Anera’s local staff in our Middle East offices evaluate our partners and assess accountability, management, technical capacity, and community outreach. Through this process we determine if the institution aligns with Anera’s values and has the capacity to work with Anera to deliver programs. As stated above, Anera does not work with organizations or municipalities designated as having ties to terrorist organizations.
