USAID Partners with Anera to Launch Gaza Health Recovery Activity to Improve Health Services in Gaza
November 20 , 2024 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is partnering with Anera to launch the Gaza Health Recovery Activity (GHRA), a five-year, $50 million initiative to enhance health services and improve psychosocial wellbeing across Gaza.
Through the GHRA, Anera will lead a vital effort to rebuild Gaza’s non-governmental healthcare network, which has been severely impacted by ongoing conflict. This initiative will restore and expand critical health services through sustainable, community-based solutions. It will provide essential medical support, including medicine and rehabilitative services, to individuals with a wide range of health needs—such as those with chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, and people living with disabilities who require tailored, ongoing care.
Within the next two months the project aims to establish three health clinics in Khan Younis to provide primary healthcare, offer health services to informal shelter communities, and serve people with disabilities; as well as establishing a health clinic in North Gaza. Mobile outreach medical days focusing on rehabilitative and mental health and psychosocial support services for persons with disabilities in Khan Younis are also planned for launch before the end of the year.
“Our goal with the Gaza Health Recovery Activity is to not only restore essential health services but to build a sustainable and inclusive healthcare network that truly meets the needs of Gaza’s people,” said Anera President & CEO Sean C. Carroll. “By partnering with local organizations and empowering communities, we are working to create a stronger, more resilient health system in Gaza that prioritizes those most in need.”
The healthcare system in Gaza has been decimated by ongoing warfare. Health infrastructure has been significantly damaged and no medical facilities are fully operational. Most civilians in Gaza have been displaced and many reside in temporary shelters with limited access to healthcare services. The GHRA is designed to rebuild the capacity of non-governmental health providers in Gaza to address the significant health needs of the population.
“Access to quality healthcare is a pillar to sustainable recovery. USAID is proud to be supporting the Gaza Health Recovery Activity to address both immediate health needs and longer-term resilience within Gaza’s healthcare system. This initiative with Anera is a critical step toward ensuring that vulnerable communities have access to essential, high-quality care while supporting a future where health services in Gaza can thrive independently,” said Amy Tohill-Stull, USAID Mission Director to the West Bank and Gaza.
The USAID-funded GHRA will draw on the expertise of Anera and its partners to revitalize primary, secondary, and rehabilitative healthcare. This collaborative effort will ensure vulnerable communities receive the comprehensive care they need. It also will expand access to care, and ensure that services are well-coordinated for communities, many of whom have been frequently displaced over the past year.
