A Beacon of Hope in Lebanon

May, 2023

Direct Relief and Anera's Life-Changing Medical Donations

In the face of immense challenges and a desperate need for specialized medical treatments, a powerful alliance emerged to bring forth a beacon of hope. Anera, in partnership with Direct Relief, driven by our unwavering commitment to making a difference, recognized the unique circumstances faced by patients in Lebanon. We set out on a mission to relieve the suffering brought on by difficult-to-acquire medications that were also expensive. Through Direct Relief’s exceptional donation of specialized treatments, we were able to illuminate a path towards healing and restoring the lives of those in need. In short, those specialized medications have become a lifeline for countless patients, transcending boundaries and rewriting the narratives of despair.

Amal Daher, the devoted sister of Joseph Daher, a 60-year-old Crohn's disease patient, shared the harrowing journey they had endured. "He has been suffering for six years and is currently on medication," Amal revealed. "Finding this medication was extremely challenging—almost impossible. Even if we managed to find it, affording the cost was never feasible." The absence of vital medication and the resulting stress had taken a significant toll on Joseph's health.

Crohn's disease, when left untreated, hampers one's ability to lead a normal life. Joseph battled constant fatigue, depleted energy levels, and chronic diarrhea… The disease also affected his appetite and his ability to tolerate and digest food. However, with the arrival of Direct Relief's donation of Adalimumab, a specialized medication for autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, and Paget's disease, a ray of hope pierced through the darkness.

Mohamad Jouneh, a 24-year-old Lebanese car mechanic grappling with Rheumatoid arthritis, shared his own poignant story. "I have been dealing with rheumatoid arthritis for over 8 years, but I received an official diagnosis 5 years ago," Mohamad recounted. In the initial years, he could relatively easily find and afford the medication. However, since the crisis began in 2019, he has faced insurmountable obstacles in obtaining the treatment he desperately needs. The cost was simply beyond his means.

"Now, having finally found it, and that too for free, I feel a tremendous sense of relief," Mohamad expressed. The excruciating pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis cast a dark shadow over his work as a mechanic, often rendering him incapable of completing even simple tasks. But with the arrival of Direct Relief's donations, Mohamad's hope for a brighter future was rekindled.

Dr. Tony Harb, the head of the medication distribution center in Karantina, shed light on the critical role played by these donations. "At present, our operations rely solely on donations," he emphasized. The economic collapse in Lebanon had left the Ministry of Public Health unable to procure medications, deepening the crisis. The donated medications received were multifaceted and crucial for enabling patients to reclaim their lives. Any disruption in their treatment could have severe repercussions for their health.

Dr. Harb shared the staggering cost of a single pack of Adalimumab that’s only found in the black market for approximately $400 (around 40 million Lebanese lira at the black market rate). “Initially, when the shipment arrived, they distributed medication to over 100 patients daily. The significance of these donations extended beyond mere relief; they became a lifeline for patients with diverse medical conditions.”

Through the generosity and commitment of Direct Relief, specialized medications were made accessible to patients in dire need. Patients like Joseph, Mohamad, and countless others found renewed hope and relief from the burdens of their conditions. The uniqueness of these donations lies not only in their efficacy but also in their recognition of the economic challenges faced by the people of Lebanon.

As patients of different nationalities benefit from these donations, the impact reverberates across borders, uniting communities under a shared purpose of healing. Anera and Direct Relief have illuminated a path forward, reminding us that in the darkest of times, compassion and solidarity can truly transform lives. Together, they have turned the tide against adversity and fostered a future where no patient is left behind, regardless of their financial circumstances.
