This Ramadan Anera was able to provide relief to families like Fatima’s and distribute 1,146 food packages.
"It's a month of mercy and love," says Fatima, a mother of five who lives in Beit Lahia, Gaza. Thousands of Muslims around the world, like Fatima, celebrate the festive month of Ramadan each year.
Unfortunately Gaza's bleak economy coupled with years of blockade has left families like Fatima’s struggling with poverty this Ramadan. With the flow of building materials and goods impeded due to the blockade, the depleted economy has left more than 80% of Palestinians in Gaza reliant on food aid to survive.
This environment makes families like Fatima’s struggle to meet their basic needs. With no jobs, Fatima’s husband collects plastic to recycle and sell to factories. The family can barely eke out a living. “Unfortunately, what he makes can't support a large family like ours," says Fatima.
This Ramadan, Anera supporters provided relief to families like Fatima’s and distribute 1,146 food packages (400 in Gaza city, 345 in Rafah, 201 in Beit Lahia and 200 in Deir El Balah). The food packages include vital items for both iftar and suhoor meals during Ramadan. Contents include macaroni, tuna, rice, lentils, cheese, cooking oil, dates, cookies, jam, beans, chickpeas and tea.
All of this was made possible by individual donations from American families. Thanks to Anera’s community of supporters, more food packages are on the way!
“In the month of Ramadan, I am thankful for all Anera’s supporters and I pray for all those who never forget Gaza.” - Amani, mother and recipient of Anera food package
