A Little Hope This Christmas in Bethlehem

At the Saint Nicholas Home in Bethlehem, dignity is not an abstract idea. It is lived every day.
Founded in 1976, the home has grown into a place of care and stability for 50 elderly residents. For decades, it has provided older adults with a safe, organized environment where they can live the life every human being deserves: a life of dignity and comfort.
In 2019, Anera provided the Saint Nicholas Home with a large building that significantly strengthened the home’s ability to serve its residents. That support transformed daily life at the facility, creating space, structure and comfort for elderly men and women who depend on the home for care and companionship.
Our work with St. Nicholas continues today. During a recent visit, Anera provided essential supplies (including towels, cleaning materials and disinfectants) as well as special kits designed specifically for the elderly residents. Through these donations, Anera seeks not only to meet practical needs, but also to bring joy to St. Nicholas, especially during the Christmas season.
The visit to the home was part of a broader winter and holiday aid effort across Bethlehem and the surrounding areas. Bethlehem, a historic city in the West Bank south of Jerusalem, is known around the world as the birthplace of Jesus Christ. It’s the heart of Christmas celebrations for Christians globally.
Together with local partners, Anera distributed approximately 4,000 aid packages throughout the area. These included kits with winter items, women’s essentials, children’s supplies and essentials for the elderly, as well as hygiene kits. The distributions supported nearly 20,000 people. The packages help families meet their daily needs during the cold winter months, offering warmth, care and reassurance at a time of year that can be especially difficult.
In a season defined by generosity and reflection, this work is about more than material aid. It is about restoring a sense of hope, honoring human dignity, and keeping the true spirit of the season alive for elderly residents, families and communities across Bethlehem and the West Bank.
