Celebrating Mother’s Day

Posted in:

Most countries in the Arab world celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21. In the U.S., Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

Mother’s Day 2025

This Mother’s Day, join Anera in celebrating the immensurable strength and resilience of mothers in Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan. As financial crises and violence plague the region, mothers from all communities work to support their families.

We also acknowledge the complexity of this day for many, whose experiences with motherhood may not be traditional. We hope you can honor and celebrate your own perseverance in this difficult time.

Through our work, Anera meets incredible women every day, whether on our own staff or in the communities we aim to serve. These mothers are not only caring for their own children, but often entire communities. As they teach, lead, or volunteer, these women demonstrate the true spirit of endurance.

As communities around the world honor the resilient, strong mothers in their families, Anera asks for attention to expecting mothers in the Middle East, particularly Gaza. Pregnant women in this area are at significantly higher risk of complications and death from childbirth.

We urge officials to implement a ceasefire, and to secure these women with the care and medicine they need to safely give birth.

Mother’s Day 2021

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate and thank Anera’s own mothers. From providing invaluable work to their respective fields to supporting their families in all their endeavors, these women have truly contributed to Anera’s mission of aid and dignity.

Yara Shanouha, a pharmacist in Anera’s medical donations team in Lebanon, was inspired by her mother, Olfat Muhammad Al-Osta, and her ability to balance her pharmaceutical career with her home life.

Yara shares, “My mom is a supermom and I still can’t believe how she found the time to direct a pharmacy with 100 employees, cook, clean, take care of her own parents and take care of us.”

In February 2021, Anera’s working mothers held a special conversation over Zoom to share experiences and support with one another. As the COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on all families, mothers in particular are feeling the burden, as they struggle to balance their roles as worker and mother.

The conversation provided solidarity and community, honoring the difficult work that mothers do every day, often unseen or uncelebrated. Looking forward, Anera hopes for a brighter future for all mothers, who carry, in the words of Anera CEO Sean Carroll, “the biggest responsibility life and society can give.”
