Anera Issues Key Report on Early Childhood Education in West Bank and Gaza

Washington, DC – In his 2014 State of the Union speech, US President Barack Obama underscored the importance of educating young children: “Research shows that one of the best investments we can make in a child’s life is high-quality early education.”

Palestinian educators are committed to the same goal. The challenges are many. Malnutrition and ill health plague children under five, many of whom suffer from anemia.

Three out of four Palestinian children in East Jerusalem, for example, live in poverty. Attending a preschool is an elusive dream. There are only four public no-fee preschools in all of the West Bank and Gaza.

Anera’s latest On-the-Ground Report, “Early Childhood Development in the West Bank and Gaza,” provides detailed background information about current conditions facing Palestinian children, their teachers, families and communities. It also offers recommendations on the best way forward to improve and expand access to high-quality education that encourages and promotes critical and creative thinking, a love of learning, and healthy habits that will shape a generation to come.

The report outlines Anera’s early childhood development initiative, which is responding to the challenge by pioneering a far-reaching strategy that provides high quality education to the youngest Palestinians, the leaders of tomorrow.
