English Language Courses Open Door to Success

Mar, 2024

Online Courses Offered in Partnership with Arizona State University Are Creating Opportunities for Youth in Lebanon

In today's fast-paced world, the ability to communicate effectively in English is paramount for personal and professional growth. Recognizing this need, Anera has joined forces with Arizona State University (ASU) to offer free academic and professional English language online courses to students in Lebanon.

ASU is globally recognized for its innovative approach to digital education, particularly with its Education for Humanity initiative. ASU's collaboration with Anera is rooted in a shared mission to empower youth and enhance their opportunities for a better life.

For the past four years, ASU has partnered with Anera to provide free, self-paced English courses to young people. These courses are specifically tailored to serve the needs of communities affected by displacement, equipping them with language skills and educational resources, and offering regionally-adapted programs for personal and professional growth. We assist in navigating these courses, facilitating smoother learning for students transitioning to online education.

Although online, self-paced learning presents challenges, many dedicated students complete and benefit from these courses. Through this partnership, students like Farah and Mohammad have experienced transformative learning journeys, reflecting the impact of the program. Reflecting one of the benefits of online education — the courses are not restricted by geography — Farah lives in Chouf and Mohammad lives in Akkar.

"Listening to fluent English speakers was... one of the most important things I gained [from the course]."

Farah, reflecting on her experience, emphasizes the invaluable benefits she gained from the ASU English courses. Farah says that "listening to fluent English speakers, learning new vocabulary, and mastering the art of writing professional emails" were among the most important components of the course for her.

Farah's strategic approach to time management, dividing the curriculum into achievable goals, propelled her towards success. The ASU English course's structured platform, rewarding students with badges and certificates upon completion of milestones, provided a motivating force throughout Farah's journey.

Mohammad's story also exemplifies dedication and perseverance. Balancing school responsibilities with his commitment to the ASU English courses, Mohammad completed six courses over the span of two years.

"Taking these courses at my own pace allowed me to learn effectively and apply my newfound skills both academically and personally," Mohammad says. Rather than interfering with his formal studies, his dedication to the English courses enhanced his performance in other subjects, highlighting the program's holistic impact.

NON-FORMAL EDUCATION

What Future for Refugee Youth in Lebanon?

Anera’s non-formal education program focuses on bridging the gaps in education for Lebanon’s most vulnerable populations. We also emphasize the social and emotional well-being of teens who have experienced trauma or have no respite from tough refugee camp life. Flexible classes located inside or adjacent to camps and tent settlements provide youth with basic Arabic, English and math training at a variety of levels.

Mohammad's aspirations for a brighter future echo the sentiments of many young individuals today. He emphasizes the importance of acquiring diverse skills to navigate the challenges of contemporary life successfully. Overcoming his fear of public speaking through the ASU courses, Mohammad has become more confident and equipped to tackle various obstacles.

Farah and Mohammad's stories underscore the significance of Anera's partnership with ASU in empowering students and youth. By providing accessible and structured English language education, the program not only enhances linguistic proficiency but also fosters personal growth and professional development. Farah looks forward to continuing her studies in English literature and Mohammad has set his sights on a future where he can help his peers through building digital educational platforms. Their journeys serve as inspiration for students worldwide to seize opportunities for self-empowerment and advancement. With determination and commitment, success knows no limits.
