By Basil, teacher-turned-farmer in Jordan
I'm Basil, a teacher by profession and a farmer at heart. I come from a proud and close-knit family, and we were fortunate to be selected for Anera’s Rooftop Garden project—an initiative that’s had a profound impact on our lives.
My love for farming has always been strong, and through this project, I’ve been able to deepen my knowledge with the guidance of Anera’s agricultural engineer, Akram Owaida. His mentorship has taught me sustainable farming techniques that I now share with others—my students, neighbors, and fellow rooftop gardeners.

"My love for farming has always been strong, and through this project, I’ve been able to deepen my knowledge with the guidance of Anera’s agricultural engineer, Akram Owaida."
As a teacher, I naturally bring my instructional skills into the garden. I involve the children in every step of the process, explaining the basics of farming and sustainability in ways they can grasp and enjoy. Seeing their curiosity grow into passion has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. These moments in the community garden in Marka have become a regular and joyful part of our lives.
In addition to working with children, I also volunteer with Anera to help new families get started with their rooftop gardens. I guide them through the process, answer their questions, and help them feel confident in caring for their own crops. It’s more than just growing vegetables—it’s about growing a supportive community.
Thanks to Anera’s ongoing support and resources, I’ve been able to merge my two passions—teaching and gardening—in ways that uplift others. What began with my own family has rippled out into the wider community. Together, we’re creating something lasting: a new generation of environmentally conscious young people and a stronger, more connected neighborhood.
This journey has shown me how education and sustainable farming can come together to transform lives. I’m deeply grateful to Anera for believing in us and for helping us plant the seeds of a better future.
