Gaza Starvation Deepens

This report comes directly from Anera’s all-staff meeting on July 30, 2025. Yazdan El Amawi, Anera’s Gaza director, outlines the current humanitarian conditions on the ground in Gaza and the status of our programs.

We are working under extremely harsh and devastating conditions. I want to start by sending appreciation to the entire team in Gaza, the West Bank, the region and in Washington. Without the collective support we would not be able to continue.

The situation in Gaza is worsening every day. Starvation is reaching an alarming level. Two million people are suffering from lack of food and basic services. Fuel shortages are affecting the water and health systems. Everything is collapsing.

Anera health clinic staff distribute emergency nutrition supplements to infants showing signs of wasting — a devastating condition they are witnessing every day.
A health worker measures a young girl’s arm for signs of malnutrition. Anera teams in Gaza are seeing more children slip into danger as food and medicine remain out of reach.

Recent reports show that a quarter of Gaza’s population is facing starvation. So far, 147 people have died from hunger, 88 of them children. People are fainting. Many no longer have the energy to search for food. Prices are skyrocketing and even when food is available most people cannot afford it.

Since Sunday, when Israel announced changes to supposedly facilitate more aid, about 250 trucks have entered Gaza. Most were self-distributed and looted before reaching distribution points. Airdrops have been chaotic. Out of six drops, four landed in red zones. People fought over the aid and the drops caused damage. Without an unconditional ceasefire and the consistent entry of at least 500 to 600 trucks per day, this situation will not improve.

Still, we are continuing our work:

  • We distribute vegetables six days a week across the north, center and south. We are managing to deliver 200 parcels a day despite high costs.
  • Our primary health clinics in Khan Younis, Deir Al Balah and Gaza remain operational. Two weeks ago we launched two new mother and child clinics.
  • Water trucking is ongoing, despite limited fuel availability.
  • We have 744 pallets of rice, 11 pallets of medicine and 20 pallets of hygiene kits waiting for entry. So far we have not been successful in bringing them in as Israel has rejected our requests. We continue to work with other international organizations to find openings.

See our Gaza & West Bank Response Log to stay up-to-date.

Today all coordination from Zikim, Kerem Shalom and Rafah was canceled. As was reported, there are corpses in the Zikim area and teams are trying to recover and bury them. Fuel, food and medicine are all in minimal supply.

Despite all of this, our team continues to do everything possible to keep things moving. We are working around the clock to find any way to get aid into Gaza and continue our services.

What You Can Do

This is not a moment to look away. It’s time to act. Here’s how:

An entire population is being starved. Gaza needs food, medicine and dignity, but above all, it needs the siege to end. It needs an end to this inhumane war.
