The Silent Crisis

Mental Health and Economic Hardship in Lebanon

The aftermath of the war in Lebanon and the continued Israeli strikes, compounded by years of political instability and economic collapse, has taken a devastating toll on its people, particularly its youth. The effects go far beyond financial struggles — mental health has emerged as an urgent issue, with rising cases of depression, anxiety, and suicide. According to Embrace Lebanon, the number of crisis calls the National Emotional Support and Suicide Prevention Hotline has received has surged, with many calls coming from individuals facing severe economic distress. In fact, calls related to unemployment now make up 42% of all calls to the National Emotional Support and Suicide Prevention Hotline.

Economic Hardship and Mental Health

The link between economic hardship and mental health is undeniable. High unemployment rates, soaring inflation, and dwindling opportunities have left many young people feeling hopeless about their future. A recent study found that 47% of 1,000 individuals surveyed showed signs of probable depression, 45% exhibited symptoms of anxiety, 43% met the criteria for PTSD, and 63% tested positive for a mental disorder. Additionally, 55% of suicide victims in 2024 were aged 38 and below, highlighting the vulnerability of Lebanon’s youth in this crisis.

Families struggling to afford basic necessities find it nearly impossible to prioritize mental health care, further exacerbating the crisis. In a society where mental health support remains stigmatized and financially inaccessible for many, the need for targeted interventions is greater than ever.

Anera Providing Hope and Opportunity

At Anera, we recognize that mental well-being is deeply connected to economic stability and access to education. That’s why our programs go beyond immediate relief, focusing on sustainable solutions that empower individuals and communities. Through initiatives like the Psychosocial Support Activities program and our employment and education programs, we are helping to address the root causes of Lebanon’s mental health crisis.

Psychosocial Support Activities

Anera’s Psychosocial Support Activities program provides safe spaces for young people to express themselves, cope with trauma, and build resilience. By engaging in structured activities, group discussions, and creative outlets, participants develop the tools needed to navigate their emotional struggles. These programs also help reduce the stigma around mental health, encouraging open conversations and fostering a supportive environment.

Employment and Education: A Path to Stability

One of the most significant factors contributing to mental distress in Lebanon is the lack of economic opportunities. Anera’s vocational training, job placement, and education programs provide young people with the skills and resources they need to secure employment and build a better future. From courses in IT, hospitality, construction, and healthcare to hands-on apprenticeships in high-demand fields, these initiatives offer financial stability and restore a sense of purpose and hope for youth in Lebanon. Beyond providing access to jobs, Anera ensures that these opportunities come with good working conditions, fair salaries, and benefits. The organization is focused on enhancing the overall quality of life for youth through both training and employment. Most of the young people in these programs are highly vulnerable and unemployed, yet the impact is clear: over 70% secure jobs after completing the training, and some even go on to start their own small businesses.

The Need for Continued Support

As Lebanon’s crisis persists, so does the urgent need for mental health support. While many organizations continue to provide essential crisis management intervention, long-term solutions require a multi-faceted approach. By addressing both economic hardship and mental health through targeted programs, we can create lasting change and ensure that Lebanon’s youth have the support they need to thrive.
At Anera, we remain committed to bridging the gap between economic empowerment and mental wellbeing. With your support, we can continue to provide opportunities, restore hope, and help individuals build a brighter future despite the challenges they face.
