Qurbani Meat Brings Comfort to Harba’s Struggling Family in Gaza
Sep, 2024
"The butcher told me it was $150 for half a kilo [about one pound] of ground beef. I didn’t have that kind of money, so I asked for five dollars’ worth. It was barely anything, but I cooked it for the family because everyone is craving meat."
Harba, a mother of eight, once lived in the Gaza City area. Now, after being displaced to Khan Younis, she faces severe hardship.
“Our situation is so bad,” she says, longing to return to her home. “We need everything—tarps for our tents, food, clothes—just everything.”
The cost of living has soared, making basic items unaffordable. “Just yesterday, I bought four apples for almost three dollars. Everything is so expensive."
Her family struggles daily to obtain essentials. "We don’t even have vegetables or cleaning supplies," she explains.
Meat, once a staple, has become a rarity. "The butcher told me it was $150 for half a kilo of ground beef. I didn’t have that kind of money, so I asked for five dollars’ worth. It was barely anything, but I cooked it for the family because everyone is craving meat."
Even tomatoes have become a luxury. Despite these difficulties, Harba clings to her generosity. “I used to invite people for coffee or tea, but now I can’t afford to be generous. Still, I love sharing what little we have.”
With support from Muslim Aid USA, Anera was able to provide qurbani meat to Harba’s family and approximately 700 other displaced families who are facing similar struggles. This much-needed relief has offered a small comfort to families struggling to survive amid rising prices and limited resources in Gaza.
