Anera’s director in Gaza, Yazdan El-Amawi was a guest on the “Global Roaming” podcast. He spoke about what the situation is actually like for those living in Gaza. He also describes Anera’s work. Yazdan begins talking at the 5-minute mark. Have a listen!

In the Tel Al-Hawa area of Gaza City, this child in Gaza took shelter inside a destroyed car after her family’s tent became unbearable in the extreme heat. She fell asleep among the wreckage. From Anera Palestine Country Director Sandra Rasheed: “I was just asked yesterday, how are you doing in Ramallah and Gaza? Simply stated: everything is not ok.

“In Ramallah, I can say we are holding up, at least for now. We live with the constant anxiety about what may come next. We worry about the “Gazafication” of the West Bank. Will it be our turn soon? Will the world look away and only send thoughts and prayers? Will families be forced out of areas to make way for settlements and military zones? Will tents fill the streets of Ramallah with thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of people? Will we worry where we will get our next meal from? These questions are at the corners of our minds, discussed in quiet circles, and thoughts that sneak up on us when we least expect it. And yet, today we still have roofs over our heads, food to give our children, and schools preparing to open.

“In Gaza, they are not ok. Families go to bed hungry. They watch their neighbors, their children, the elderly, the sick starve and waste away. They are waiting for evacuation orders and wonder where they will set up a tent…if they can even find one. Their children have not seen a classroom in two years. Markets are empty. Hope is a thing of the past. Their life is absolute chaos. They are not ok, and to this question, we can reply: they are still alive.

“What baffles and infuriates me is families are being massacred and children starved, and yet the world watches. Instead of outrage and accountability, we see Palestine solidarity protests cracked down on in Germany, UK, and the US.

“Palestine is not ok. And if we are all watching this happen, then can we honestly think that the world is ok?”

West Bank and Gaza Situation Update
as reported in a staff meeting by an Anera staffer in Gaza

In the WEST BANK, the situation remains tense with recent military incursions in Nablus and Ramallah, as well as ongoing targeting of businesses in Adjouli. Settler violence continues to escalate, with villages attacked, homes ransacked, and families displaced to neighboring communities for safety. Heavy movement restrictions persist across the territory.

Despite the challenges, Anera’s programming is advancing:

  • Education: Kindergarten projects in Jericho are progressing, alongside summer camps funded through MECI and CRC.
  • Health: Two new mobile clinics will soon launch in the northern West Bank (with PMRC and PRCS), and the prosthetics makerspace is nearly operational. A health proposal covering both the West Bank and Gaza is in development.
  • Livelihoods: 1,900 food parcels (funded by Choose Love) have been rerouted to the West Bank. Rooftop repair assessments are underway, and needs assessments for IDPs are informing upcoming distributions of kitchen, hygiene, and elderly kits. A $3.5 million rooftop project with BMZ is also in preparation.

In GAZA, the humanitarian situation is dire. Logistics remain severely disrupted, with aid convoys facing looting and security incidents. Since May 19, roughly 4,000 trucks of aid have entered Gaza on behalf of 10 partners (UN agencies and INGOs). For August 1–23, only about 300 aid trucks entered, the lowest since access was first permitted. Commercial goods are also entering, easing prices slightly, though most families still cannot afford basics. Food supplies such as wheat, rice, limited fruits, vegetables, and poultry are entering, but quantities remain insufficient.

The humanitarian outlook in Gaza remains extremely bleak. More than one million people are displaced under harsh conditions of heat, sewage overflow, and food and water scarcity. Anera’s staff, despite facing the same hardships as the broader population, continue to keep clinics, water trucking, and aid distributions running.

>>> The IPC Special Snapshot | GAZA STRIP: Famine confirmed in Gaza Governorate, projected to expand | 1 July – 30 September 2025 Published on 22 August 2025

The people of Gaza have been starving. Our clinics are diagnosing new cases of severe acute malnutrition in young children every day. Now, the IPC’s declaration makes this man-made famine real and defined. This starvation is on purpose, and the trickle of aid being let into Gaza is nowhere near the immense need of Palestinians facing true famine. Anera and other experienced NGOs who have worked in Palestine for decades are ready and able to scale up operations immediately, delivering millions of meals within days once the gates are opened, but we cannot address the critical needs of Palestinians facing famine without full aid access into Gaza. An entire population is being starved, and global leaders need to act now to demand Israel allow humanitarian aid in and find an end to this horrific war.

“I am very exhausted today. I just left the office at 7pm. The heat and humidity are extreme — the temperature in the region is the hottest we’ve had since 1942. The evenings bring no relief. These are amongst the worst days over the past 22 months.” — Anera staff member in Gaza City
