Gaza and West Bank Response Log

Gaza and West Bank Response Log | November 2024

In this log, Anera provides updates on unfolding war in Palestine and our response. In some cases, additional activities may be added retroactively to the daily entries as we receive additional program reporting.

November 30, 2024

We are deeply disturbed by the killing of five aid workers in multiple Israeli airstrikes in Gaza today. In the last 14 months, Israel has killed more than 330 humanitarian workers in Gaza. While Anera will continue to operate despite these tragedies, such acts inflict immeasurable harm on humanitarian efforts and the communities we serve.

These repeated attacks on individuals who dedicate their lives to alleviate human suffering are blatant violations of international law and an assault on the principles of humanity.

This cannot be normalized or tolerated. We urgently call on the international community to demand accountability for those who violate the protections afforded to civilians and humanitarian workers.

Through our tekias (community kitchens), Anera’s team in Gaza prepared and distributed 13,200 hot meals and 3,329 vegetable baskets throughout Khan Younis and the Middle Area, providing enough food for 69,576 meals.

Our Gaza teams in the north distributed 300 kitchen sets (kitchen utensils, a tarp, a tray, plastic jug) and 1,200 blankets (2 per family), funded by UAE.

Our health team today conducted four clinics. At our two wound management clinic in Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah, medical staff treated a total of 146 patients; our ear, nose and throat clinic attended to 103 patients; and our dermatology clinic treated 114 people.

A man said to someone who had just received a bag of flour from Anera, “Will you sell me your flour for 500 ILS ($138)?” The flour recipient replied, “No, not even for 1,000 ILS!”

This exchange occurred during Anera’s distribution of flour bags provided by WFP. Over the past two days, our Gaza teams have distributed 1,650 bags, providing approximately 742,500 meals.

It is worth noting that most recipients said the flour arrived just in time, as they had none at their residences and no bread was available in the bakeries. The scarcity of flour is a critical issue facing Gazans, turning it into a matter of life and death. Urgent action is needed to address this crisis and ensure people have access to their most basic needs.

November 22, 2024

The situation on the ground in Gaza remains fraught with challenges, from organized looting to severe public health crises. Despite these obstacles, AneraÂ’s teams are working tirelessly to ensure that vital aid reaches the people who need it most.

The lack of access to chronic medications is taking a devastating toll on displaced individuals. Overcrowded shelters and disrupted mobility are leading to deteriorating health outcomes, such as muscle atrophy and untreated infections. These conditions emphasize the urgent need for consistent healthcare access and adequate shelter for displaced families.

Despite the challenging environment, Anera is working to bring in vegetables from the West Bank, with shipments expected to reach Gaza soon, pending logistical coordination.

AneraÂ’s commitment to supporting Gaza remains unwavering. Through adaptability and determination, Anera staff strive to overcome barriers and deliver life-saving assistance to their communities.

Food aid and health updates for today (22 November) will be added here as they come in.

November 12, 2024

Today, Anera and seven other humanitarian organizations published a scorecard assessing the lack of progress in improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which is now at its worst point since the war began in October 2023. As Anera’s president and CEO, Sean Carroll, said,

“Anera’s humanitarian workers in Gaza have spent the past year expending superhuman effort in subhuman conditions to provide assistance to civilians. Now, this well-researched, independent assessment of whether conditions for, and safe delivery of, sufficient aid into Gaza have improved over the past 30 days shows that, emphatically and alarmingly, the answer is ‘No.’ In the past month, we’ve seen families throughout Gaza, and particularly in the north, subjected to increasingly horrific conditions. This is a damning indictment of Israel’s failure to follow international humanitarian law and to respond to the critical and reasonable demands of its greatest ally, the United States. The consequences will be more innocent lives ended and destroyed. They should also include restrictions on Israel’s ability to continue prosecution of this war in a manner that is increasingly being seen as consistent with ethnic cleansing.”

Only minimal quantities of food are allowed into Gaza, and the market is sparsely stocked with essential items. Compounding this crisis is the skyrocketing cost of basic goods, drastically reducing purchasing power and leaving many families unable to afford the food they need.

Our health team’s findings at Anera’s mother and child clinic today prove the effect that the shortage of food is having in Gaza: 45 women and 28 children were diagnosed today with moderate acute malnutrition.

This is an urgent wake-up call. Immediate action is required to address the severe food insecurity and prevent widespread hunger in Gaza.
