The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) describes the situation in Gaza as dire. Over the weekend intensified air strikes and shelling in Gaza City killed and injured scores of people. The Palestinian Civil Defense reported conducting more than 50 rescue or recovery missions over the last 10 days.

Hospitals are under severe strain. The Ministry of Health appealed for blood donations amid acute shortages, while reporting that 162 people including 32 children have died from starvation and malnutrition since famine was confirmed last month. Nutrition services in Gaza governorate are collapsing, with nearly half of treatment centers closed.

Displacement continues on a large scale. Families are squeezed into tents on beaches, crowded into school shelters or sleeping on rubble in Khan Younis and Deir al Balah. UNICEF warned that repeated displacement orders in Gaza City are creating a growing risk of family separation.

A JHOC update recorded widespread targeting in Gaza City on September 22, including strikes on At Tuffah, Beach Camp, Al Nasser, As Sabra and Tal al Hawa. Hamada Fuel Station was hit, killing one contractor and halting fuel missions north until security assessments are completed. Civil society institutions were also destroyed, including PMRS’s Al Samer clinic, the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme’s training center and the offices of several organizations in the Al-Shawa building. Al Quds hospital sustained damage amid bombardments in Tal al Hawa.

Al Rantisi hospital is no longer functional. All patients and most staff were moved elsewhere, leaving North Gaza without a single operating hospital. Hemodialysis patients have been pushed south, overwhelming existing units. Education has also been hit — one temporary learning space in Gaza City serving 255 children was destroyed, and 89 others have suspended operations.

Anera continues delivering essential health and relief services across Gaza. We saw 790 patients at our field primary healthcare centers in Khan Younis and Deir El Balah (363 at Deir Al Balah and 427 at Khan Younis).

We distributed 120,198 gallons of potable water to displaced people — 200 cubic meters in the middle area camps and 255 cubic meters in Khan Younis camps — ensuring access to safe drinking water to 151,600 displaced people.

We provided 300 fresh vegetable baskets to displaced persons in Khan Younis, supporting approximately 3,300 meals and helping families meet their immediate nutritional needs.

And with support from the World Food Programme, we conducted awareness sessions in Khan Younis, reaching a total of 114 men, women, and young people.

Morning check-ins from staff in southern Gaza reflect the reality of forced displacement. “Working from a tent is another story,” wrote Suad Lubbad. “Or working from the street,” added Yazdan El Amawi. Mostafa Elghosain explained that everyone is occupied with forced displacement and trying to adapt to the difficult conditions.

Update: We have successfully transferred all equipment, medicines, and medical tools from our mother and child care clinic in Tel Al Hawa and our field primary healthcare center, both in Gaza City. We are now working to establish new locations in the south to continue providing essential services, as hundreds of thousands of people have relocated south and the humanitarian need is increasing. Unfortunately, we were unable to retrieve the medicines, equipment, and tools from our mother and child care clinic in the Nasr neighborhood, as the area remains extremely unsafe to access at this time.

Anera continues delivering essential health and relief services across Gaza. We saw 846 patients through our field primary healthcare centers in Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah (419 patients in Deir Al Balah and
427 at Khan Younis).

September 20, 2025

Israeli military operations intensified in Gaza City with strikes in Sheikh Radwan, Tal al-Hawa and Sabra neighborhoods. In Sabra, several residential homes were bombed, killing at least 28 Palestinians while more than 60 remain trapped under the rubble. On the same day Anera staff distributed 107 vegetable baskets in Khan Younis, reaching 556 people.

Anera distributed 113,594 of potable water to displaced people today — 175 cubic meters in the middle area camps and 255 cubic meters in Khan Younis camps — ensuring access to safe drinking water for 143,300 of displaced individuals. In addition, we provided 300 fresh vegetable parcels to displaced persons in Khan Younis, supporting approximately 3,300 meals and helping families meet their immediate nutritional needs.

September 19, 2025

Israel’s military assault on Gaza City has intensified with bombardments and ground operations destroying entire neighborhoods. What was once the largest urban center in Palestine is now a place of forced flight as the Israeli army orders civilians to evacuate south through narrow corridors while continuing to strike the city. People are being concentrated into smaller and smaller enclaves within a Gaza that is already shattered with little land left that can be called habitable.

Areej Al Masri, who recently fled south, describes her experience:

From Yazdan El Amawi, relaying OCHA’s latest reporting:

Yazdan added a grim tally:

Together these first hand accounts from Anera staff describe a Gaza under relentless destruction where civilians are corralled into shrinking corners of land. The voices of Areej and Yazdan converge on a single plea: stop the war, protect civilians and allow life saving aid to reach those who are still surviving within the ruins.

We typically do not conduct distributions and program activities on Fridays.

September 18, 2025

This the reality in Gaza City. As world leaders convene next week at the United Nations (UN), we are calling on all member states to act in accordance with the mandate the UN was charged with 80 years ago. What we are witnessing in Gaza is not only an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, but what the UN Commission of Inquiry has now concluded is a genocide.

Anera continues delivering essential health and relief services across Gaza. We saw 991 patients at our field primary healthcare centers in Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah (413 in Deir Al Balah and 587 at Khan Younis). And we distributed 300 fresh vegetable parcels to displaced people in the middle area, providing 3,300 meals.

September 17, 2025

Today the Israeli army issued an order to residents of Gaza City to move south. A temporary transit corridor was declared open along Salah al-Din Street beginning at noon and lasting 48 hours until September 19. Palestinians were told they must use the designated streets marked on official maps and follow the instructions of security forces. It is yet another forced displacement order pushing people into smaller and smaller enclaves within the Strip.

The orders issued by the IDF.

At the same time communication lines in the north were cut once again. The Palestinian Telecommunications Company reported that fixed internet and landline services in Gaza and North Gaza governorates were disrupted after supply routes feeding the area were struck. Technicians are attempting to repair the damage despite the danger of working under bombardment.

From Khan Younis a small scene captured the persistence of life. Anera’s Suad Lubbad described what she witnessed on her way to the office:

In the midst of displacement and destruction Palestinians continue to fight to keep education alive holding on to what remains of stability and dignity. And even under these conditions Anera teams are still managing to deliver aid. Today, we saw 520 patients were served through our healthcare clinics in Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah (275 at Deir Al Balah clinic and 245 at Khan Younis clinic).

Also today, we distributed 99,065 gallons of potable water — 100 cubic meters in the middle area camps and 275 cubic meters in Khan Younis camps — providing 125,000 people with water.

In addition, we distributed 300 vegetable baskets to displaced people in the middle area, supporting 3,300 meals.

September 16, 2025

In recent days our colleagues in Gaza City have faced unbearable circumstances while trying to keep vital services running. Here are some of the messages from today.

From Sean Carroll, Anera’s President: “I’m checking in on everyone after what I hear was another terrible night. Is everyone accounted for?”

From Yazdan El-Amawi, Gaza Director: “Hi Sean — we all are safe and accounted for. We haven’t received any evacuation notice that specifies our office or staff residences but the orders often cover large blocs that might include them. Over the past few days most of us have been working from home while a small number of staff go into the office to follow up operations. We are working on our emergency plan to continue operations in the south and expand as required while maintaining water trucking and clinics in the north.”

Yazdan went on to describe the severe shortages: “No veggies in the north for the last week since we bring them from the middle and south. Congestion at Al-Rasheed and the hot weather have prevented deliveries. Two mother and child clinics have been shut down for four days though the primary health clinic is still operating with fewer patients because of the displacement.”

Amid these horrific realities, Anera staff in Gaza still find small moments of joy. From Suad Lubbad, program manager: “In the middle of war we have good news to say: Sami’s daughter and mine finished their exams today. We’ve just taken a deep breath and smiled. Thank you to all of you who kept supporting us during this challenge.”

Anera continues delivering essential health and relief services across Gaza. Despite the displacement orders and ongoing military attacks on Gaza City, hundreds of thousands of people are still in the city, whether out of resolve or because they have no means of fleeing. Anera staff in northern Gaza are still providing humanitarian assistance for people trapped in Gaza City. Today, we successfully distributed 23,776 gallons (90 cubic meters) of potable drinking water amid the ongoing assault.

Anera also distributed 99,065 gallons of potable water in southern Gaza — 120 cubic meters in the middle area camps and 255 in Khan Younis camps — collectively providing water to 155,000 people.

We also distributed 300 fresh vegetable parcels were distributed to displaced persons in the middle area, supporting 3,300 meals.

We saw 757 patients at our field primary our healthcare centers in Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah (406 in Deir Al Balah and 351 in Khan Younis.

September 15, 2025

In recent days, our colleagues in Gaza City have borne witness to some of the darkest moments yet in Gaza. Here are two messages we have received.

From Ibrahim Zaanoun:

Photo from Ibrahim Zaanoun, as he and his family evacuated from Gaza City yesterday, September 14, 2025.

From Yazdan El Amawi: “Today has been among the most intense and destructive days of airstrikes in Gaza City, particularly in Al Rimal, Tal Al Hawa, and surrounding areas. Some of our Gaza City colleagues have relocated to the south while others on the team are working from home, staying with their families, and continuing to coordinate relocation of more staff as conditions evolve. The situation is extremely tense, and we continue to monitor the impact on our health clinic operations.”

These personal accounts echo what UN agencies are reporting: heavy bombardment across Gaza City has caused mass displacement and catastrophic civilian harm. Nearly 70,000 people have fled south in recent days, many forced to pay exorbitant costs to escape along the only open route. Over the past month, more than 150,000 people have been displaced. Exhausted families arrive in Deir Al Balah and Khan Younis, where already-limited health and food systems are overwhelmed.

The humanitarian toll deepens each day. Clinics have closed under displacement orders and insecurity, leaving thousands without care. Malnutrition treatment facilities in Gaza City are shutting down, and in the past 24 hours alone, three people have died from starvation. To date, 425 people across Gaza have died of malnutrition, one-third of them children.

Despite these conditions, Anera and other humanitarian organizations are doing what they can to respond, but access remains severely constrained. Of 17 humanitarian missions coordinated with Israeli authorities yesterday, only four were facilitated.

As Ibrahim reminds us, every act of displacement is also a human story of loss. And as Yazdan underscores, our staff continue to navigate the dangers while finding ways to serve their communities. Through their courage and the persistence of our partners, Anera remains committed to delivering aid under the most harrowing conditions.

Unfortunately, due to intense bombardment, unsafe living and working conditions, and the evacuation orders issued for all residents in Gaza City and the north to move south, Anera was forced to suspend operations in two of our health clinics in the city. Our mother and child care clinic in the Tel Al Hawa area and our field primary healthcare center in Al Shati’ area of Gaza City have both ceased operations. A significant amount of medical supplies, equipment, and tools remain on site, which we are working to relocate before the situation further deteriorates.

However, we are continuing to provide essential health and relief services in areas further south. We saw 807 patients today at our healthcare clinics in Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah (431 in Deir Al Balah and 376 in Khan Younis).

We successfully distributed 23,776 gallons (90 cubic meters) of potable drinking water in Gaza City amid ongoing military attacks. And in southern Gaza, we distributed 95,102 gallons of drinking water — 120 cubic meters in the middle area camps and 240 cubic meters in Khan Younis camps — collectively providing 150,000 people with safe drinking water for the day.

We also distributed 300 fresh vegetable parcels to displaced people in Khan Younis, supporting approximately 3,300 meals.

We typically do not conduct distributions and program activities on Fridays.

September 11, 2025

Due to ongoing bombardment and evacuation orders, we have been forced to temporarily suspend operations at our mother and child care clinic in the Nasr area of Gaza City. The security situation has made it unsafe for both staff and patients to access the facility.

We continue delivering essential health and relief services elsewhere across Gaza. We served 1,022 patients at our healthcare clinics in Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah.

We distributed 13,209 gallons (50 cubic meters) of clean drinking water to displaced families in Gaza City. We also distributed 73,968 gallons of potable water in southern Gaza — 120 cubic meters in the middle area camps and 160 cubic meters in the Khan Younis camps — providing 110,000 people with water.

We distributed 47,551 gallons of clean water to displaced families across Gaza — 60 cubic meters in the middle area, 80 cubic meters in Khan Younis, and 40 cubic meters in Gaza City — providing 60,000 people with fresh drinking water.

We also distributed 300 fresh vegetable parcels in the middle area, providing approximately 3,300 meals.

With support from World Food Programme, this month we have been conducting a series of community awareness sessions across Gaza, engaging 463 men, women, and young people.

During one session, a participant shared a heartbreaking story: a mother who lost her son during heavy bombardment near the Morag area. Each day, the family went to Salah al Din Street, pleading to be allowed to enter the dangerous area to retrieve their son’s body. Each time, they were forced to turn back, fearing Israeli fire. Eventually, the family reached an agreement with a young man from the area, offering 5,000 shekels (~$1,508) in advance if he could retrieve the body. The young man, accompanied by another, set out on a donkey cart toward Morag. But they came under heavy fire and were forced to flee, unable to complete the mission. Tragically, the money was lost and the body remains unrecovered to this day.

September 7, 2025

September 5, 2025

From one our staff today: “At around noon today, while passing through Gaza City on the way to the middle area, I witnessed the aftermath of a major building collapse. One of the city’s oldest landmarks, an 11-story building in a densely populated neighborhood, had been completely leveled. Dozens of families were suddenly left on the streets with nothing, surrounded by hundreds of displaced people already sheltering in nearby tents. From the vehicle I was in, I saw scores of women, men and children standing in shock and disbelief at the destruction.”
