Gaza and West Bank Response Log | May 2024

May 12, 2024
Today, three of our tekias (community kitchens) were operational, collectively preparing 38,000 hot meals for displaced families in Khan Younis, Deir Al Balah and Jabalia (in the north). Our tekia in the north has relocated to an area that did not receive an evacuation order and our team is monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and continuity of food distribution in the area.
With the borders closed for a week and limited local supplies, addressing the needs of the people – particularly in densely populated areas with displaced populations – has become increasingly challenging. The borders need to be opened in order to facilitate the scaling up of aid and meal production in areas accommodating large numbers of displaced individuals from other governorates. Our Gaza staff are working tirelessly to find solutions to provide essential assistance to those in need.
Anera also distributed 1,200 fresh produce baskets, primarily to displaced individuals who recently fled Rafah and sought refuge in Khan Younis and the middle areas. The baskets contained enough produce to support 26,400 meals.
In Gaza City, our team distributed 500 food parcels provided by the UAE to displaced persons currently without shelter, as well as to hosting communities in Gaza City. The parcels came out of our distribution center in Gaza City. Efforts are ongoing to retrieve the aid left behind at our distribution center in Jabalia in the north.
Combining hot meals, food parcels, and fresh produce, the Anera team provided enough food aid to support a total of 84,400 meals.
May 11, 2024
Our Gaza staff are reporting the alarming news of new and unexpected evacuation orders, issued by the Israeli military, for all of the North Gaza Governorate. Our team lead in Gaza tells us:
“Today marked another devastating day here. The people of Gaza are in a fight for survival. We were in the north preparing for aid distributions early this morning when leaflets fell from the sky calling for an immediate evacuation (we had a 15-minute warning) of 200,000 people. Shortly after, a huge explosion rocked the area. I felt the heat and impact.
“People are scared – we are scared. But we must help them. So many people were begging us not to leave because they need our help. We were forced to leave for our safety. We secured our distribution center, leaving the aid behind, and left for Gaza City with our families.
“Everyone is now heading to Gaza City, although most of the city is in ruins. There are already 200,000 people there, and 200,000 expected to flee from the north. However, in its current state Gaza City can only support maybe 100,000 people, making it impossible to accommodate the anticipated influx of 400,000 individuals.
“These displaced people will be left to sleep on the streets, on rubble, and in shells of buildings. We are currently working on relocating our community kitchen in the north and figuring out how we can get the aid here to support the displaced people in Gaza City.
“Adding to this nightmare, all crossings have been closed since May 6 with no commercial goods or aid coming in. The local market has been depleted of supplies, leaving remaining goods exorbitantly priced. The supplies we have left to distribute probably won’t last the week. We need the borders open to bring aid in or more people will starve. It is so hot here and there is no water. People are thirsty.”

A Threatened Invasion of Rafah Will Be a Catastrophe for Civilians
Today, Israel issued evacuation orders in the form of airdropped leaflets, text messages and phone calls to the large civilian population now sheltering in Rafah, directing people in the eastern neighborhoods of Rafah to flee to Mawasi, a southern coastal area devoid of infrastructure for basic services. Most families sheltering in Rafah have already been forcibly displaced during this war — often multiple times.
An Israeli ground invasion of Rafah will exacerbate the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza. With over 1.2 million people seeking refuge in Rafah, many with conditions that render unassisted movement impossible, the order to flee will deepen the dire scarcity of food, water and hygiene facilities. A ground assault will disrupt aid routes into Gaza at a time when the head of the World Food Programme has declared a “full-blown famine” is happening in the north and spreading south.
Anera and many other humanitarian organizations recently sent a public letter to President Biden urging the U.S. to prevent a Rafah offensive, along with taking action to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.
Due to the ongoing military operations and imminent invasion of Rafah and for the safety of our staff, our team has evacuated the area and temporarily suspended operations in Rafah until conditions allow for a safe return. We remain committed to extending aid to secure areas whenever and wherever possible. Our team continues to operate in Khan Younis, Deir Al Balah and the north. We are closely monitoring the situation and implementing all necessary measures to prioritize staff safety and determine how best to continue delivering essential aid in the current circumstances.
Despite evacuation orders issued today via phone calls, messages, and flyers instructing people to leave Rafah for designated “expanded humanitarian zones,” our team continued in their work both within and outside Rafah.
Five of our tekias were operational today, collectively preparing 47,000 meals:
- Qatari Camp tekia in Rafah: 7,500 hot meals
- Khan Younis tekia: 7,500 hot meals
- Mawasi Khan Younis tekia: 6,000 hot meals
- Middle area tekia: 6,000 hot meals
- Jabalia tekia in the north: 20,000 hot meals
Due to the ongoing military operations and invasion of Rafah and for the safety of our staff, our team has evacuated the area and temporarily suspended operations in Rafah until conditions allow for safe return.
Nevertheless, we remain committed to extending aid to secure areas whenever and wherever possible.
In north Gaza, we distributed 2,600 food parcels provided by JCI to both displaced and non-displaced people in Gaza City, north Gaza, and surrounding areas.

Between hot meals and food parcels, we provided enough food aid to support 86,000 meals.
Last night, we received four trucks from UNICEF carrying hygiene kits and menstrual pads.
May 5, 2024
Today, the UAE and Anera announced the arrival of desperately needed food relief.
The World Food Programme declared today that northern Gaza is in the midst of famine. The head of the UN agency, Cindy McCain, said “there is famine – full-blown famine – in the north, and it’s moving its way south.” The announcement underscores the importance of shipments like that delivered by the UAE and Anera, and the urgent need for vastly more food aid in general into Gaza.
We served 47,000 hot meals in Gaza today. Five of our tekias, or community kitchens, were operational, including at the camp at the Qatari Hospital in Rafah; in Mawasi, Khan Younis; in Sanabel, Khan Younis; at Abu Assad, in Deir Al Balah; and in Jabalia, in the north.
Our new wound management clinic, supported by Together Rising, was also open today, and we provided treatment for 15 new patients and follow-up treatment for nine returning patients.

Anera received 16 trucks carrying food.
May 3, 2024
Most of Anera’s team in Gaza are living in tents right now, given the danger of invasion in Rafah. Despite exhaustion, patchy communications and myriad other daily challenges, they continue to deliver humanitarian relief every day. Today, they coordinated delivery of 48,500 hot meals of fish to the Qatari camp, the Sanabel camp, in Deir El Balah and in Jabalia. They also brought in 10 trucks carrying 172 pallets of food aid.

Anera’s health team in Gaza started our first wound management clinic today in Rafah, treating 17 patients, with ongoing support from Together Rising, Americares and Direct Relief.
Our Gaza team provided 20,000 rice and chicken hot meals at our kitchen in Jabalia, 7,500 in Khan Younis and 7,500 at the Qatari camp in Rafah. Anera also distributed 600 food parcels (from the Jordan Chamber of Industry – JCI) and 1,500 fresh produce baskets in Rafah, Khan Younis and Deir Al Balah. Between hot meals, food parcels, and fresh produce, Anera distributed enough food aid to support 105,200 meals.
Anera dispatched three trucks to the north of Gaza today, transporting essential food aid consisting of food parcels, rice, tomato sauce, and hummus provided by JCI. Yesterday, we received four JCI trucks, each containing two truckloads of chips, one food parcel, and one carrying flour. We also received three UNICEF trucks transporting water and hygiene kits.
